The Human brain
6. Updates or reboot?
The Brains behind it all
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) in a motorcycle and the human brain share some similarities, despite serving vastly different purposes. The ECU, essentially the brain of the motorcycle, is responsible for managing and optimizing various aspects of engine performance such as fuel injection, ignition timing, and emission control. Similarly, the human brain acts as the central processing unit for the body, orchestrating complex functions and responses.
Both the ECU and the human brain rely on intricate networks of interconnected components to process and transmit information. In motorcycles, sensors provide real-time data about factors like engine temperature, throttle position, and wheel speed, enabling the ECU to make instantaneous adjustments for optimal performance. Similarly, the human brain receives input from sensory organs, processes it, and generates motor responses or cognitive reactions. In both systems, adaptability is crucial – the ECU adjusts parameters based on changing riding conditions, just as the human brain adapts to new environments and experiences. Obviously, the human brain has many more complex processes, but you can appreciate the similarities.
Does your ECU need a reboot?
The motorcycle's ECU is usually well protected within the bikes’ frame. Protecting this part of our classic (you!) will require a bit more attention and on a more regular basis.
Physical exercise is essential as it drives blood circulation to the brain. Both cardiovascular exercise and weightlifting will help here. Equally important is providing different types of stimuli for your brain through different activities, e.g. reading, playing games, an instrument etc. Anything else? Reading lots of motorcycle magazines and related service manuals will also help. ;-)
Always wear a good quality and well-fitting helmet. Avoid smoking, drugs, reduce alcohol, and take regular exercise, it all help the human ECU start to optimise itself. Once the cells in this ECU (the brain) burn out, they can't be replaced. So best keep them healthy!
Some useful additives for your classic
Vitamins: B complex, D, C, & E, Choline
Minerals: Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mg), Selenium (Se) Omega-3 fatty acids, Iodine, (I) & Copper (Cu)
Read labels before taking and check with your doctor if required. Older classics may require different additives compared with newer models.
Stay active, read, exercise, and do lots of different things - do all this regularly. Smoking and drugs ruin the ECU. Weightlifting and cardiovascular exercises help keep it running nicely.
